FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS A FCA?

An Occupational Therapy Functional Capacity Assessment (OT FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by occupational therapists to assess an individual’s ability to perform various activities and tasks related to daily living, work, and leisure. The goal of the assessment is to determine a person’s functional capacity and limitations, especially in the context of their occupational roles.

The assessment may include:

  1. Physical Abilities: Evaluation of strength, endurance, range of motion, coordination, balance, and other physical factors relevant to daily activities and work tasks.

  2. Cognitive Abilities: Assessment of cognitive functions such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and executive functions that are essential for occupational performance.

  3. Psychosocial Factors: Consideration of emotional well-being, mental health, and social factors that may impact a person’s ability to engage in meaningful activities.

4. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assessment of the individual’s ability to independently perform self-care activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating.

5. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): Evaluation of more complex daily tasks, including meal preparation, housekeeping, shopping, and managing finances.

The findings of the assessment help occupational therapists develop tailored interventions and recommendations to improve or maintain an individual’s functional abilities. These interventions may include therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment, environmental modifications, and strategies to enhance independence.
